River Ganga known for its rich cultural and religious heritage is declared as the ‘first living entity of India’ by Uttarakhand High Court. Holy river Yamuna has also been recognized as a living entity. In a landmark judgement, the high court has also instructed the Uttarakhand government to set up an administration board to ensure efficient cleaning and maintenance of holy rivers.
After being declared as the living entity, Ganga and Yamuna have become eligible to enjoy all the human rights availed by the citizen of India.
Last week, New Zealand government also passed the ruling to declare 145-km long Whanganui River as a living entity.
