Neerja Bhanot’s family to sue Neerja makers for not sharing the box office profit

Producers of Sonam Kapoor starer Neerja, which was also awarded the National Award in Best Film category has landed in a legal trouble. The movie was also a commercial hit and grossed close to 120 crores.

The movie was based on the life of a fearless Air Hostess Neerja Bhanot who laid down her life trying to protect passengers from terrorists. Her family has said that they will take the filmmakers to the court. The family says that the movie producers broke the promise of sharing 10% box office profit with the Neerja Bhanot Trust.

Sonam Kapoor played the lead title role in the movie and her acting received much applause. Neerja Bhanot was a senior Air Hostess in Pan Am 73 flight ( Bombay to Frankfurt to New York). The plane was hijacked at Karachi Airport by Palestinian terrorists of Abu Nidal group on 5th September 1986. Neerja was killed 2 days before her 23rd birthday. She courageously tried to save the passengers but was killed. 20 people were killed in the plane. There were 200 Indians in the plane and 13 died.

Neerja Bhanot was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. She became the youngest and the first woman to receive the award.

Neerja’s family lives in Mumbai.
