When we talk about beauty and wellness routines, it is generally about hair, skin or nails. You must have your salon appointments booked for facials, haircuts or manicures. But have you ever heard about vaginal steaming? Sounds interesting, right? It is actually a thing which is practiced in African, Central American and in some Asian cultures as well. This practice involves a woman squatting or sitting over steaming water which contains herbs like mugwort, basil, wormwood, and rosemary. It has been claimed that this routine can help keep the vagina clean and free of infections, and can aid reproductive health as well by enhancing fertility. It can also ease pain caused by menstrual cramps.

One of the most well-known advocates of this wellness regimen is Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow. She has praised it profusely on her website Goop, after which the practice became immensely popular. If this method of vaginal pampering has any scientifically proven benefits at all, is still an unanswered question. There is no empirical evidence substantiating this process’ purported benefits.

You can try doing vaginal steaming at home by following these steps,

  • Add a cup of the herbs you prefer to use in a container of hot water. Primarily, rosemary, mugwort, basil, and wormwood are used for vaginal or yoni (the Sanskrit word for vagina) steaming
  • Let the herbs steep in the water for over a minute
  • Take off your clothes from the waist down
  • Spread your legs and sit over in a way that your vagina is exposed to the steam
  • Cover your legs with a towel to make sure the steam does not escape

The steam can last for 20-60 minutes depending on your comfort level. This is the latest amongst numerous beauty fads tempting women. Have you ever tried it or do you plan to try it?
