Dowry is one of the regressive social customs in India that cuts across caste, ethnicity, regional and religious lines. Dowry related torture and deaths is a very common social irony. Exchange of dowry reduces marriage to a sort of commodity exchange and in most of the cases pushes the bride’s family on the brink of destitution.
Muslims in an obscure village of Jharkhand did something commendable to end the feudal tradition of dowry. 300 Muslims from Palamu region of Jharkhand who took dowry have returned 6 crore INR to the respective families of the bride’s. The maulavis of the village too have vowed that they won’t solemnise marriages involving dowry. Such voluntary endeavours for social progress and community awareness go a long way in social transformation and combatting social ills.
