The fiery Vidya Balan has captivated one and all with the trailer of her upcoming movie, “Begum Jaan”. A period drama, this film is set during the Partition era. Vidya plays the role of a bold brothel owner whose property falls on the India-Pakistan border. She is ordered by the authorities to vacate the property. The refusal to do that results in the ensuing drama ingrained with a range of varying emotions.
The ensemble cast is carrying actors from both the ends of the spectrum – veterans like Naseeruddin Shah, Ashish Vidyarthi, Rajit Kapur, Vivek Mushran, Ila Arun are juxtaposed with fresh faces like Pallavi Sharda and Gauhar Khan. Set in rural Punjab, a rustic flavor is pervasive in the trailer. While the whole cast leaves a lasting impression with their on-screen characters in the 2:55 minute long glimpse, Chunky Pandey in a radically different look is hard to recognize.
Vidya Balan in her dauntless and cheeky avatar is the show-stealer. Her power-packed dialogues lends her character a domineering persona. Begum Jaan looks promising and it seems, it will renew focus on the lives of sex workers. The women with their strong screen presence look all set to turn the tables on the all pervasive viewpoint that the XX chromosome needs their male counterpart to stand up for them.
