Kolkata sex workers celebrate Raksha Bandhan, say they want to erase differences
In the hope of receiving equal respect in society, the sex workers of Sonagachi, Kolkata, tied rakhis around the waist of a passerby. The event was organised by the Durbar Mahila Samanvaya Committee, which is one of the largest community-based organisations of sex workers in West Bengal.
The sex workers from Sonagachi celebrated Rakhi Purnima by tying Rakhis. In a statement, the president of the Durbar committee said that they thought to celebrate this auspicious festival in order to erase the difference between them and other communities. He added that there should be no discrimination.
Moreover, the committee also invited the ministers and the politicians to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with them.
A sex worker, Seema Bhogla informed that all political, non-political people, officials and intellectuals were invited to attend the event. She said that their main motto is to celebrate every festival with everyone.
She added that they want to show the world that being a sex worker, they can enjoy as any other human being. While mentioning further she said that like every year they are also planning to celebrate Durga Puja here.
