Recently, a circular has been issued by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) asking Ph.D and Mphil students to enter the titles of their reasearch work in Hindi as well. As per the statement made by administration, the move has been taken in order to track reviews of theses and dissertations online.
However, the move has already resulted in protests on social media. Students including students’ union general secretary Satarupa Chakraborty, have already been protesting against the circular by tagging her social media posts on the subject with #ResistHindiImpositionInJNU.
Meanwhile, it has been informed by assistant registrar of the university that the circular had been issued as per center’s guidelines. According to the guidelines, it requires mark sheets and degrees to be bilingual.
Chakraborty, informed that Wednesday is the last date for submission of research work.
“This will be a problem for a large number of students who do not come from Hindi-speaking backgrounds”, he added.
“We have also questioned the intention behind the circular and have raised the issue with the deans of several schools”.
The move once again brings JNU in limelight. The center is playing its trump card of cultural and linguistic diversity. The imposition of ‘Hindi’ language has now hit JNU, which has been one of the major targets of BJP since last year.
