Woman dies in a ‘menstruation hut’ in Nepal
Menstrual health is still a raging debate in third world countries. A 23-year-old woman in Nepal was found dead in an isolated hut on Tuesday. The woman was left alone in the hut due to ancient Hindu practice which disallows women to stay inside the home during the menstrual cycle.
Menstruation is still seen as a taboo in several communities of Nepal. Hence, in several remote areas of Nepal, menstruating women are considered impure and forced to sleep in remote huts located away from the house.
It is called Chhaupadi hut (menstruation hut).
As per the report published in Hindustan Times, Gauri Bayak (Budha) was found dead by her neighbor. The police are investigating the matter and the real reason for the death will be known after postmortem.
The practice of sending women into menstrual exile is bizarre and unacceptable.
