What we ridiculed as a joke after sweeping mandate of BJP in the recently declared UP election results has turned out to be a reality. Most folks enjoyed the humour!
Yogi’s appointment signifies that BJP is unabashedly catering to its Hindutava hardliner constituency and attempting to turn fence sitters and mild conservatives into hardliners. BJPs development plank of infrastructure, law & order and employment generation is off. Ecconomy free market agenda was the veneer. Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas was repackaged vacuous slogan. Scratch the glossy surface and the real face appears.
Appointment of Yogi Adityanath sends a very divisive and polarising message, not at all an inclusive one. It is a recipe for communal conflagration. Palpably a pitch for Hindutava assertion and aggressive. Muslim alienation would be there. And Muslim community would be further pushed into seclusion and ghettoisation out of fear of majoritarian impulses which will only breed more radicalisation amongst them. Radicalism and extremism of all hues supplement and feed off each other.
Yogi Adityanath is a five time MP from Gorakhpur in eastern UP. He became youngest MP in 1998 – at the age of 26. He is also a traditional Hindu monk and has his own right wing Hindu organisation known as Hindu Vahini which does activism on petty but sensationalist issues like Love Jihad.
To merely call Yogi communal would be highly charitable and rather too superficial a criticism. He is amongst the most virulent and vitriolic BJP politicians who is known for his rabid venom spewing and incendiary speeches. He presided an event where a man called for Hindus to exhume corpses of Muslim women and rape them. Appalling. Necrophilic.
He said he would go on and place Ganesha, Gauri idols in all mosques. There is no difference between bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan and internationally designated terrorist Hafeez Sayed as per him. What’s more horrific than Yogi’s bigotry and rabid hatred is the acceptance that he has found amongst the people. Most ironical is that those who criticised SP government for criminalisation and breakdown of law&order, are cheering for a man who has close to a dozen FIRs lodged against him.
Maybe it’s time to look at the wise words of George Bernard Shaw to find some solace and lament the dumbing down of not only social discourse but very basic ethics and decorum.
