Zurich in Switzerland is the home to world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant
To find a vegetarian restaurant in central Europe, is nothing more than a pleasant surprise for the vegetarian tourists. And to find a world class multi cuisine vegetarian restaurant with hundreds of dishes would be a gourmet’s delight.
Zurich in Switzerland has the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant. The Hiltl restaurant was established in 1898 and since then it is owned by the fourth generation of the same family. The restaurant is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world. Ambroius Hiltl, the man who opened the restaurant, married his chief chef Martha Gneupel in 1904.
The Hiltl is five storied restaurant and it serves 500 types of dishes from all corners of the globe. Indian food is among its specialties.
The India connection goes way back to 1951 when Margarith Hiltl, mother of the current owner, travelled to New Delhi along with a Swiss delegation to participate in the World Vegetarian Congress. She learned many Indian recipes there.
Former Indian PM Morarji Desai dined at The Hiltl in 1953. The Hiltl has over 30 cooks and employees from over 60 countries. In 1931 The Hiltl was the first restaurant in Zurich to have a fully electronic kitchen.
